What are chux bed pads for adults, and how are they used?

Chux pads are disposable underpads: flat, absorbent sheets with a waterproof back that protect beds, chairs and other surfaces from incontinence, spills and accidents. Here is what they are made of, where the name comes from and how caregivers use them.

Why are underpads called chucks?

Chux was the trade name of one of the first disposable underpads sold to hospitals. The name stuck the way many brand names do, and today nurses, caregivers and shoppers say chux, chucks, underpads and bed pads for the same product. Curera calls its line Chucks for that reason.

What are chux pads made of?

A good chux pad is a small sandwich of materials, each with one job. In a Curera Chucks pad there are five:

Cheaper pads skip the polymer and rely on fluff alone, which is why they feel wet on top and leak at the edges.

How are chux bed pads used?

The most common use is on a bed, under someone with bladder or bowel incontinence, usually together with adult briefs or protective underwear as a second line of defense. Pads are also laid on wheelchairs, recliners and car seats, under patients after surgery or childbirth, on changing tables, and as puppy training pads and crate liners.

In hospitals the larger, stronger pads double as a draw sheet: two people hold the edges and use the pad to slide a patient up the bed or roll them onto their side. That is what the 400 lb repositioning rating on Chucks MAX pads is for.

Choosing chux by size and absorbency

Chux come in a wide variety of sizes and absorbency levels. Light absorbency pads are designed for chairs and small spills; premium underpads with a polymer core are made for heavy incontinence and overnight use, when fluid volume is high and odor control matters. Large sizes such as 30x36 and 36x36 cover more of the disposable bed setup, so a sleeper who moves stays dry.

For incontinence care at home, most caregivers find that a breathable, soft top is worth the small extra cost: it keeps skin cooler and adds comfort over long nights. Many customers use chux together with adult diapers or briefs, and some add incontinence pads inside the brief for extra capacity. If you are unsure what to buy, try a small pack first, then move up to the case. Curera Chucks Premium, Chucks MAX and the extra-soft Chucks MAX+ (MAX plus) cover the range, and the same pads protect furniture and other surfaces.

Disposable chux vs reusable pads

Disposable chux are used once and thrown away. Washable pads are laundered and reused. Disposable pads win on hygiene and speed during the night; washable pads win on long-term cost and waste. Many homes use both: a washable mattress protector on the bed and a disposable pad on top. Our guide to disposable vs washable bed pads goes deeper.

Where can I buy chux pads?

Chux are sold by medical supply stores, pharmacies and online. Every Curera pad on this site links to the partner store listing with the current price and delivery date.
